چکیده

The Single Heater Test (SHT) is one of two in-situ thermal tests included in the site characterization program for the potential underground nuclear waste repository at Yucca Mountain. The heating phase of the SHT started in August 1996, and was completed in May 1997 after 9 months of heating. The coupled processes in the unsaturated fractured rock mass around the heater were monitored by numerous sensors for thermal, hydrological, mechanical and chemical data. In addition to passive monitoring, active testing of the rock mass moisture content was performed using geophysical methods and air injection testing. The extensive data set available from this test gives a unique opportunity to improve our understanding of the thermal-hydrological situation in the natural setting of the repository rocks. The present paper focuses on the 3-D numerical simulation of the thermal-hydrological processes in the SHT using TouGH2. In our comparative analysis, we me particularly interested in the accuracy of different fracturematrix-interaction concepts such as the Effective Continuum (ECM), the Dual Continuum (DKM), and the Multiple Interacting Continua (MINC) method.

Electrical Resistivity Monitoring of the Single Heater Test in Yucca Mountain, FY98 -1st Quarter Results

Of the several thermal, mechanical and hydrological measurements being used to monitor the rockmass response in the Single Heater Test, electrical resistance tomography (ERT) is being used to monitor the movement of liquid water with a special interest in the movement of condensate out of the system. Images of resistivity change were calculated using data collected before, during and after the ...

Evaluation and Comparative Analysis of Single Heater Test

The Yucca Mountain Project is conducting a Single Heater Test (SHT) in the Exploratory Studies Facility at Yucca Mountain. This report describes the thermal and thermomechanical data collected for the SHT through the third quarter of heating (through 31 May 1997) and compares the data with numerical predictions in order to gain insight into the coupled Thermal-Mechanical-Hydrologic-Chemical pro...

On Water Flow in Hot Fractured Rock -- A Sensitivity Study on the Impact of Fracture-Matrix Heat Transfer

Dual-continuum models have been widely used in modeling flow and transport in fractured porous rocks. Among many other applications, dual-continuum approaches were utilized in predictive models of the thermal-hydrological conditions near emplacement tunnels (drifts) at Yucca Mountain, Nevada, the proposed site for a radioactive waste repository in the U.S. In unsaturated formations such as thos...

Modeling thermal-hydrological response of the unsaturated zone at Yucca Mountain, Nevada, to thermal load at a potential repository.

This paper presents a numerical study on the response of the unsaturated zone (UZ) system of Yucca Mountain to heat generated from decaying radioactive wastes emplaced at the proposed repository. The modeling study is based on the current thermal-hydrological (TH) mountain-scale model, which uses a locally refined 2D north-south cross-section and dual-permeability numerical approach. The model ...

Comparison between single and double flow plane solar heaters considering gas radiation effect

ABSTRACT: In this paper, the thermal characteristics of single and double flow plane solar heaters with radiating working gas were analyzed and compared by numerical analysis for the first time. The laminar mixed convection gas flow in the heaters was numerically simulated by the CFD method using the finite volume technique. The set of governing equations included the conservation of mass, mome...
